Olympian Susan Francia shares her best tips for sore muscles

Even athletes in peak condition can get sore muscles. And while a little muscle pain is normal, especially if you are just starting a new sport or fitness program, you don’t want that stiffness and soreness to interfere with your progress.

We asked Team Ribose member and five-time world champion rower Susan Francia, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, to share her best tips for coping with sore muscles. “I try to prevent sore muscles by stretching before and after workouts,” she says. Stretching helps to warm up muscles and increases your limberness which may help to prevent soft tissue injuries.

Francia also recommends doing focus work on the muscles you use most often during exercise. “For example, I work the small muscles used for rowing, and try to do extra core work,” she explains. If you are not currently working with a trainer, do some research to learn which muscles may need more attention because of your workout routine. Also, pay attention to proper form and proper-fitting equipment (such as shoes, bicycle, etc.) because both of those are factors that can lead to sore muscles as well as injuries.

Another proactive tip in Francia’s strategy is to take Bioenergy Ribose immediately after her hard workouts. “That way, my body can start recovering as soon as I’m done. San Diego morning TV show features Olympic gold medalist’s fitness tips

When two-time Olympic gold medalist Susan Francia visited San Diego Living, she brought the fitness essentials: two Olympic gold medals, recommendations for a morning fitness routine and Bioenergy Ribose. After flexing her rower’s biceps, she discussed some of the finer points of being a world-class athlete, including how she eats a whopping 4,000 calories each day and how ribose has a positive impact on her energy and muscle soreness. Encouraging viewers to cook their own meals – “It’s good to eat stuff that’s less processed”– Francia added that she takes ribose both in the morning and at night to maximize its benefits for her endurance and recovery. She then led the show’s host on a brief morning workout that combined jump squats, lunges and pushups. Francia also reminded viewers about the importance of staying hydrated.

Olympic athlete offers five Thanksgiving survival strategies

The holidays are a challenging time to stay in shape. It’s easy to over-indulge, and lose your motivation to work out. So we asked Team Ribose member Susan Francia, 2008/2012 Olympic Gold Medalist and 2010 US Rowing Athlete of the Year, for her nutritional training tips. Here’s how she suggests finding balance this holiday season.

1. Set athletic goals for yourself. “This can include running in a fun 5k turkey trot on Thanksgiving day, participating in a local run during December, or even setting up a bike race among family members. Having a goal will help motivate you to keep working out.”

2. Exercise before big meals and then promptly the next morning. “If you have even a little window of time, take advantage of it! This will keep your metabolism going and help you digest. Even if you’re feeling a bit sluggish the next morning, just start exercising and it will get better. Fun family activities the next day will help. Play a game of basketball or go for a group hike in the mountains. It’s much easier to be motivated when you have friends and family around you!”

3. Check your weight before, during and after the holidays. “This includes ‘big meal’ times such as Thanksgiving, and holiday parties and dinners. Try to not let the number fluctuate too much. Moderating portion sizes and eating your normal amount of food (not everything in sight) will help you from overeating and gaining weight. It is okay to leave food on your plate.”

4. Don’t wait until January to make resolutions. “Start getting fitter now!”

5. Stick to your routine. “If you decide that you will go to the gym two times a week and run three times a week, write it on a calendar and stick to your plan. Seeing the reminder will help you be more. Stop finding excuses!”

 

SupplySide West 2013: Industry reacts positively to caffeine study

SupplySide West 2013 may be history, but it sparked conversations about the future uses of ribose that will continue for a long time to come. Among the hottest topics of conversations was the results of a new study showing that combining d-ribose with caffeine significantly reduced caffeine usage level and provided sustained energy for much better performance. Bioenergy Ribose was used in this study.

Bioenergy Life Science President Tom VonderBrink was thrilled with the industry’s reaction. “We had great reception and positive comments on the caffeine study. It was exciting to have something so timely and significant to discuss with attendees.” Previous studies have shown that combining ribose with reasonable dosages of caffeine may be a logical synergy.

Olympian Susan Francia had fun getting to know attendees who stopped by our booth. She’d hold up her smaller gold medal from the Beijing Olympics and say with a grin, “Before ribose” … then hold up the significantly larger gold medal she earned in London and say, “After ribose!”

Then she’d get down to business, explaining how Bioenergy Ribose helps her with muscle and energy recovery, getting her through a back injury and ready for the Olympics.
